Title: Wood-fired Baker (F/T)
Overview: Our business grows 50+ vegetables on an acre and a half and bake sourdough breads, pastries, and dry goods in our 5'x7' wood-fired oven. We sell mostly at farmers markets, which we do 10 months of the year. We see ourselves as part of a community of food producers all doing their small part to build a sustainable regional food system. We are committed to building up the grain economy in the Mid-Atlantic (http://commongrainalliance.org) and building soil health in our fields.

You will join our small but mighty team to help produce sourdough breads, croissants, and snacks in our wood-fired oven. All products use local grains, including spelt and rye. Bread and croissants are our meat and potatoes, but we are excited about our new snack line (granola, cookies, and crackers) because: a) they showcase the lovely grains our local farmers are growing, b) there is a huge need for locally produced snacks in our community, and c) they use the waning heat of our oven.
You will get baking perks without baking hours; our 3-4 person team works during the day, and our goal for FT positions is 4 days / 35 hours.
Job description
You will be trained according to your interest and aptitude. Tasks may include mixing, shaping, and baking bread, laminating, pastry make-up and baking, packing for market, dish-washing, oven management, snack production, packaging, and shipping. Our week is organized around Wednesday and Saturday farmers markets. We work during the daytime, and we strive to create a warm and welcoming workspace. You will also have the opportunity to to represent us at one of our farmers' markets.
Job requirements
You are a good fit for our team if you are versatile and adaptable. You are willing to learn, can stay focused on a task, and can take verbal and written instruction. Some kitchen experience is a plus, but we will train you. You are passionate about food and feeding your community and have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills. You are respectful, and a joy to be around, but are also content to work alone. You are organized, can manage your time, and take pride in a clean workspace and a job well done. You are able to work quickly and efficiently while attending to detail, and you are able to problem-solve on the fly. You are punctual, dependable, and able to meet deadlines.
Wood-fired baking throws curve-balls at times, and we are continuously tweaking our processes to adjust for variability in flour and to improve our products; you can take those changes in stride. You must be able to stay at work for your whole shift. Wood-fired baking is very physical, and you must be able to stand all day and safely lift fifty pounds, reach, squat, and learn new physical skills. Bonus: you are able and willing to safely drive a 16' van on mountain roads in all weather.
Start / End dates: This job starts immediately; we ask for an initial commitment through Christmas 2024, and we encourage applicants interested in longer-term employment.
Housing: Housing is scarce in our area, so you have the option of renting a room in a shared house with other members of our team at below-market rent (utilities, internet, and basic furnishings included).
Compensation: $15-18 / hr full-time. We pay monthly. Benefits include workers compensation, unlimited free access to unsold farm produce and baked goods, holidays off—we don’t work Thanksgiving, or between Christmas and New Years, and a workspace culture that puts people first.
To apply: Please submit at least two of the following:
1) a one-page resume
2) a cover letter explaining why you are a good fit for this job
3) a paragragh, recording, video, or illustration of something you have accomplished that you are proud of (may or may not be food-related)
